As a member of Bechtel, Dr. Watkins was the responsible engineer for the analysis and design of turbine pedestal foundations and other machine foundations for power plant projects, both domestic and international. He performed dynamic and seismic analysis using closed form and three dimensional finite element methods and developed standardized software tools for the design of vibrating and rotating equipment supports. He resolved construction problems and corresponded with the vendors to ensure the proper use and construction of these systems.
Dr. Watkins performed the dynamic analysis and design of the combustion turbine, steam turbine, and heat recovery steam generator foundations on several natural gas-fired, combined cycle energy facilities in California. Dr. Watkins also served as a liaison between construction and engineering to resolve field installation problems.
